Invest in Engaging Toys
There are plenty of great dog toy options that can provide hours of stimulation and entertainment. Some helpful options include:
- Puzzle toys
- Motion-activated balls
- Squeaky toys
- Licking mats
- Frozen kongs filled with peanut butter
If you think that engaging toys will help to entertain your dog while you’re at work, you might want to keep a few of them stored until you leave for the day. This will give your dog a positive association with spending time alone.
Turn on Soothing Sounds
If your dog tends to be a little anxious when you’re gone, television or music can help to keep him calm until you return home. There are plenty of television shows and movies that can offer a good distraction for your dog. And music can even be therapeutic for canines. If you decide to use this method, be sure to leave the television or the stereo at a low volume. Dogs have really good hearing, and sounds can become too loud or overwhelming for them very easily.
Consider Adding Another Furry Family Member to Your House
Sometimes the best option for dogs that spend a lot of alone time in the house is to give them a friend. Another dog or even a cat will give your dog someone to spend time with while you’re working. If you are considering another animal, you will have to devote time and energy to safely introducing them to your dog. You will probably also have to devote some time to training to ensure they will fit seamlessly into your home life.
Take Your Dog to Daycare While You’re at Work
Dog daycare is a great option for dog parents who have to spend a lot of time outside the home. Not only does this give your dog a safe place to stay during the day (and some supervision to boot), but it also gives him the chance to be social. Making new friends at doggy daycare can entertain your dog and provide important interactions. When you drop your dog off at daycare for the day, you won’t have to worry about how he’s faring at home alone.
