The Basics

What are the benefits of dog grooming?

It keeps your dog comfortable and sanitary. Regular grooms keep the hair from matting. Keeping the face clean prevents irritations to the eyes, ear cleaning prevents ear infections, and keeping the private areas sanitary means your furniture stays sanitary as well!

How is grooming being handled during COVID-19?

We offer grooming by appointment only right now and are offering curbside check-in and check-out. The groomer will call for instructions before they begin the groom and discuss their recommendations with you, the owner. We have additional staff helping the groomers so that they can work efficiently to decrease the amount of time your dog has to spend at the salon.

Do you also groom cats?

We have three groomers who groom cats.

There is nothing needed to prepare unless your dog gets very stressed with grooming. Discuss anxiety meds with your doctor prior to grooming if you feel it is necessary.

Can I bring toys/treats for my dog?

Not during COVID 19. We have plenty of treats and toys on hand that are sanitized between pets.

What happens when you’re done grooming my dog?

We take your dog for a potty break and we call you as soon as they are done for pickup. They are kept in a secure, private holding area until pickup.

Will my dog be kenneled before/after the groom?

Yes, this is for their safety and to allow for adequate dry time after their bath.

Dog Grooming Prices

Every groom is different and we have baseline prices, but we have to see the condition of the dog before we can accurately quote the grooming fee. If there is excessive matting or dirt, there may be additional fees, but we try to be as transparent as possible before we begin the groom.

How are grooming services priced?

Prices are based on breed, hair coat condition, and length of time since the last groom. It is based on the amount of time the groomer has to spend. It is also based on the cut requested.

Age & Frequency

How old should a puppy be for its first groom?

We start puppy grooms at about 12 weeks. This will not be a full groom, but is intended to get the puppies comfortable on the grooming table and used to the noises associated with grooming.

Do you groom elderly dogs? Is a pet too old to be groomed?

Yes we groom elderly pets. There is no pet too old to be groomed, but we will handle them very carefully and your vet may recommend pain medications before and after to keep them comfortable if they have arthritis. We also may recommend doing a groom in stages if doing it all in one sitting is too much for an elderly pet.

My dog recently had surgery. Can I have him or her groomed?

This depends on the type of surgery. We normally do not bathe pets with stitches or staples in place. These are normally removed 10-14 days after surgery. If orthopedic surgery has been done, we need to make sure the bones are healed. This takes 8-12 weeks.

How often should my dog be groomed?

This depends on the breed. Dogs that require frequent brushing or that have thick hair coats should be groomed every 4-6 weeks.

How often do dog nails need trimming?

This depends on the dog and the rate at which their nails grow.

How often do anal glands need to be expressed?

Some dogs need this done monthly and others never need them done.

Anxious & Reactive Dogs

What should I do if my dog is anxious about grooming?

Talk to our trainers and doctors about using positive reinforcement and conditioning for consent training. We can help keep this from being a fear-filled experience!

How do you ensure that a dog stays calm during grooming?

We use licky mats, treats, low-stress handling and have trainers on hand to assist if needed.

Do you charge an additional fee for behavioral issues or difficult dogs?

There may be an additional fee depending on the amount of time and work the trainers and groomers need to spend with the pet.

Are there any special options for an anxious dog?

We offer consent training through our training department and we offer sedated grooms for those pets that simply cannot tolerate a groom while awake. We also work with our veterinary team and training team to offer low stress/fear-free grooms. Our goal is to make your pet as comfortable as possible in the safest way possible.

How do you handle a reactive or aggressive dog?

We recommend consent training with our behavior department and use low stress, fear-free training. We also can help you condition your dog to a basket muzzle.

Do you sometimes defer a groom if the dog is anxious or reactive?

Yes, the safety of the dogs and our staff is paramount.

Do you use sedatives with reactive or anxious dogs?

Yes, as prescribed by the veterinarian.

Our Dog Groomers

Are dog groomers licensed?

A license is not required in Michigan.

How much training do dog groomers receive?

All of our groomers have gone to an accredited Grooming School and they have over 100 years of combined experience.

Are there credentials I should be looking for my groomer to have?

References from other clients and friends is the best resource. Also finding a facility that allows you to watch or take a tour.

Do I get the same groomer each time?

If you request the same groomer, we will be happy to accommodate!

How can I tell if my dog likes his groomer?

Your dog should be willing to enter the facility with minimal apprehension and should not show signs of stress or distress. Grooming can be stressful, so if your dog shows more than minor hesitation for the unknown, talk with our vets, trainers, and groomers to make grooming a positive experience.

Should I tip my groomer?

Groomers appreciate signs of appreciation for their efforts, for sure!

Dog Styling

Can you groom my dog to the breed standard?

Yes.

Can you do a puppy cut?

Yes.

Do you do any special cuts or styles?

The groomers can usually do any style requested.

Can I bring a picture of how I want my dog styled?

Absolutely!

Why doesn’t my dog look like the photo I showed you?

Sometimes the dogs don’t have the same coat texture or have mats that prevent us from making it look exactly the same.

My dog’s hair is matted. Do I need to cut the hair short? Can’t you just brush it out?

Sometimes we can brush the mats out, but if they are very thick or to the skin, it is impossible to brush them out. This would be incredibly painful for the dog, so it is better to shave them off and start over.

What is the difference between tangles and matting?

Tangles are small knots that are easily combed out. Mats are thick balls of hair that we cannot get a comb through.

My dog’s hair is extremely matted. What can I expect from a shave down?

If the ears are matted, you can expect your dog to shake his head and feel uncomfortable. Sometimes we even have to ask the veterinarian to give medications to keep them calm so they do not injure themselves shaking their head so much. The skin may be irritated and red or even have an infection under the mats. If we find this, we will recommend that you seek veterinary care so that your pet can be comfortable after the shave. Your dog or cat may be quiet for a few days after a shave down as it can feel a bit strange to them.

How is my dog dried? Do you use heated drying cages in your salon (kennel drying)?

We use air dryers and stand dryers, we do not use enclosed cage dryers. We use big warm air blow dryers on each animal unless they do not tolerate it.

What type of shampoos do you use? Can I bring my own shampoo?

You can bring your own shampoo. We use a luxurious oatmeal shampoo that smells great and feels good on the dog’s skin.
