An entire week off from school is fast approaching. What are you going to do with your pets and kids running wild around the house? Send them outside, of course! But wait, it’s a muddy mess out there right now…what to do, what to do?
The fact is that while pets and kids can be the best of friends, everyone benefits from having a plan. With this in mind, we hope to make your spring break a breeze.
Air Travel
Our central location makes traveling throughout the country relatively easy. However, any type of traveling requires extra attention to your pet’s microchip, tags, medication, and nutritional needs.
Air travel can be expensive (larger animals have to be kept in cargo areas), and you have to obtain a travel certificate (required by most airlines). This indicates that your pet is fully vaccinated, protected from parasites, and healthy enough to travel. Before making arrangements, schedule a wellness appointment for your pet in case there are issues that could inhibit travel.
Hit the Road
Road trips are the natural choice for pets and kids, and we have a variety of destinations available to us. For example, consider the following:
- Going North – The Upper Peninsula is a fabulous place to explore with your family. Check out pet-friendly Holland, Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Sleeping Bear Dunes Cruise for pets and their people. Mackinac Island also makes for a memorable spring break trip.
- To the East – Even though it’s a bit of a drive, you might consider taking your pet to Niagara Falls. You could also check out these pet-friendly hotels near the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland or go a bit further to Allegheny National Forest. Pets and kids alike will enjoy viewing (or smelling) the cherry blossoms while hanging out on a Potomac River Cruise in Washington, D.C.
- Elsewhere – Chicago is a wonderful destination for pets and kids, offering great dog parks like Puptown and pet-friendly cruises along the waterfront. Further west is Telluride, Colorado, a city that has more dogs than people! Lastly, if soaking up some rays is your family’s choice, head to Texas where pets ride free on the Galveston Dolphin Cruise.
Spring Break Fun for Pets and Kids
It’s no secret that we have the best of everything in Michigan. Remaining close to home during spring break could be the perfect choice for your family. Enjoy any number of fun activities in Waterford, explore dog-friendly eats in Grosse Pointe, or visit the Bow Wow Bake Shoppe. You and your pooch could also head to Detroit to check out the riverfront and book a room at a pet-welcoming hotel for a fun “staycation.”
There’s Always Boarding
If your destination is too far or is jam-packed with activities that aren’t pet-friendly, please consider boarding your pet with us. We offer safe, cozy, and comfortable accommodations for your best fur friend while you’re away plus lots of extras to make your pet’s staycation a true treat.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the team at Union Lake Pet Services. Happy trails!
