In pet stores, there is a bewildering array of leashes, so what is the best kind of dog leash for your pup? Even if your dog is extremely well-trained, you should always use a leash when walking in public. Leashes can protect your dogs from other animals (who are not so well-trained), minimize fear from passers by, and even can help the environment. Dogs who are off-leash are more likely to find a secret potty and you might inadvertently miss picking up some of their waste.
Not every dog needs the same kind of leash, however. So, what is the best kind of dog leash for your pup? Your friends at Union Lake Pet Services have some advice to help you find the right fit for your needs:
The Standard “Basic” Dog Leash
Items are often popular for a reason, and that is especially true for the standard leash. These straight leashes are typically found in sizes that range from four to eight feet in length. This means you can often find one that will be comfortable for your dog while still maintaining control on your walks. If you are just starting to train your dog, a shorter leash can help you teach with fewer distractions. You can find straight leashes in a wide-range of colors and materials, including nylon, rope, chain, and even leather. There are reflective and glow-in-the-dark options if you often find yourself on early morning or late night walks.
The Long Dog Leash
Long leashes start at about ten feet and can range all the way up to fifty feet. This is a good option for a dog who is good at following commands, and can be quite helpful if your pooch needs a little extra training before going fully off-leash. Long leashes give dogs a little more freedom, but still provide a safe and effective way to train while walking.
The Double Dog Leash
Do you live in a multi-pet household? If so, the double dog leash makes it easier than ever to take two dogs for a walk at one time. With just one handle that connects to two leads, this leash is much easier for one human to control. It has a double-ringed swivel to keep the two leads from tangling, which allows your pups to still explore while staying close by.
The Hands-Free Dog Leash
If you and your pup are more active than most, the hands-free leash might be a good option for you. You attach it to your waist, which keeps the lead steadier on runs and hikes. Holding the leash in your hands while running could jerk your dog’s collar around a lot. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it could become unsafe. When the leash is affixed to your core, however, it will stay in place better and help both you and your dog work up a sweat.
Dog Harness
