Grooming is an essential element of pet care, but it’s something that many pet owners have questions about. When Should You Start Grooming?
Puppies as young as 10 weeks old can visit the groomer (as long as they’ve started their puppy vaccination series). If possible, take your dog for their first grooming appointment before they turn 16 weeks. Starting young with your grooming habits helps your dog acclimate them to the grooming experience. Before your first grooming appointment, you should introduce your pup to touching and handling so they are already comfortable with it. Be sure to consistently (but gently) touch their paws, ears, nails, thighs, and even teeth.
Do Some Breeds Need to Be Groomed More?
Certain breeds with longer hair or thicker coats must be groomed more frequently than short-haired pets. These breeds include:
- Poodles
- Cocker spaniels
- Yorkshire terriers
- Afghan hounds
- Huskies
- Bichon frise
- Shih tzu
- Maltese
- Border collies
- Australian shepherds
- Labrador retrievers
- Goldendoodles
- Terriers
- Pomeranians
Try to schedule a grooming appointment for these breeds every 4-6 weeks. Dogs with more manageable coats can wait 8-12 weeks between appointments.
Do Cats Need to Be Groomed?
While cats manage most of their grooming independently, they do need some help occasionally. They must also be brushed regularly to remove loose fur (that could otherwise lead to hairballs) and discourage excess dander. They also need ear and paw care.
How Long Will the Appointment Take
While the exact duration will depend on the condition of your pet’s coat and our occupancy, typical grooming appointments take about 2-3 hours. The reason it takes a little time is that the groomer will do some pre-bath work, then your dog will receive a bath (larger dogs and thick coats take a lot longer than washing our hair!), and then we have to dry all of that hair and brush/clip/ shape the haircut. Sometimes dogs need a little break in between all of this work. Your groomer will give you a time estimate when you drop off your animal, and we will call you when they are ready to be picked up.
What If My Dog Is Anxious During Grooming?
We use licky mats, treats, and low-stress handling methods to keep animals calm during grooming. If your pup is still feeling nervous, we have positive reinforcement and conditioning for consent training classes that can help minimize these feelings and make your dog more comfortable. We have trainers on our team who can help you and your dog work with the grooming team to make the grooming process a pleasant experience for your dog. We can also advise you on stress-relieving medications if your dog needs additional support.
Can My Dog Get a Special Style?
Our groomers are well-trained in a variety of styling techniques. We can usually accommodate most style requests.
Do I Tip the Groomer?
While it is not required, leaving your groomer with a cash tip is appreciated, especially if you are pleased with the service. The typical 15-20% rate is usually more than enough to show your thanks.
